PLEASANTON, CA–Tri-Valley Repertory Theatre’s “Smokey Joe’s Café-The Songs of Leiber & Stoller” opens on April 27, 2019. The show runs April 27, May 3, 4, 10, 11 at 8:00 PM and April 28, May 4, 5, 11, 12 at 2:00 PM. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 2pm and is rated PG. Smokey Joe’s Cafe is performed at the Firehouse Arts Center in Pleasanton.

This musical theatrical revue features 40 of the greatest songs of the past century, including show-stopping classics like “On Broadway”, “Stand by Me”, “Jailhouse Rock”, “Hound Dog”, “Love Potion No. 9”, “Spanish Harlem”, “Yakety Yak”, and “Charlie Brown.” It celebrates the music of the legendary songwriting duo, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. Their generation-defining songs provided hit after hit for icons like Elvis Presley, Ben E. King, The Coasters, and The Drifters.” The original Broadway cast won a Grammy award in 1997, was nominated for seven Tony awards and was the longest musical revue on Broadway in history.

DUBLIN, CA–Congressman Eric Swalwell, Dublin High School Class of ’99, returned to his alma mater yesterday for a his first Candidate for President Rally in front of an enthusiastic hometown audience. The rally had all the trappings we’ll be seeing a lot more of in the coming year leading up to the Primaries – music, speeches and signs, signs and more signs.

In the case of Swalwell, he built his stump speech around his middle class roots which ultimately landed him in Dublin after multiple moves and school changes in search for an affordable home. He laid out his agenda starting with gun control – he held his first Candidate for President Town Hall at Parkland – and covered issues you’d expect of a Democratic candidate including the cost of education, economic opportunity for the middle class, universal healthcare coverage and restoring trust in Washington. Swalwell also pledged to have a Lincoln-esque cabinet of rivals if elected, by including Republicans in his cabinet. Swalwell joked that he appears on Fox News regularly so that his parents, both Republicans, have a chance to see him on TV.

Dublin, CA–The 2018-19 school year has been the year of teachers strikes across the country as teachers negotiate for better pay and benefits. The Dublin Unified School District and Dublin Teachers Association have been in intense negotiations with teachers holding test votes on strike action and organizing large rallies.

Today the Dublin Unified School District (DUSD) and the Dublin Teachers Association (DTA) announced that during negotiations on April 11, 2019, the two parties reached a tentative agreement that, once ratified, will bring closure to their current labor negotiations, establishing a contract that extends through the 2019-2020 school year. DUBLIN, CA–Dublin High School Class of ’99 alum Congressman Eric Swalwell is a candidate for President of the United States. Swalwell will be holding a Kickoff Rally at Dublin High School this Sunday April 14 from 2pm – 4pm. In January 2013 we featured a three-part series of articles following Swalwell’s inauguration.

Swalwell, an Iowa native now serving his fourth term representing California’s 15^th Congressional District, announced his candidacy Monday night on CBS’ “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” The announcement kicks off a 10-day national sweep with events planned in Florida, Iowa, South Carolina, California, Nevada, and New Hampshire.

“I’ve been in Congress for six years. I see an America in quicksand, making zero progress on anything that matters. I hear from school children who are learning in fear because too many lawmakers love their guns more than they love our kids,” Swalwell said. “We can no longer count on the same old people to solve the same old problems. Nothing will change until we have a leader who is willing to go big on the issues, be bold with solutions, and do good in governing.” Read more…

DUBLIN, CA–On May 31st, the largest graduating class in the history of Dublin High School will walk through their commencement ceremony. For many, it will be a time for celebration. For others, it will also include many moments of reflection. For one former John Green Elementary Gator, it will become a full-circle moment. It began with taking after-school classes with an emphasis in chemistry. This just furthered his interest in STEM related courses and a potential career in automation. We were introduced to DHS senior Wesley Wong by a proponent of the Valley Children’s Museum. We are pleased to share the progress of the VCM and to highlight Mr. Wong’s contributions.

One of Dublin’s best kept secrets is the Valley Children’s Museum. Never heard of it? Well you’re not alone. Keep on reading so that you can be “in-the-know” and share it with others! Valley Children’s Museum (VCM) has been in existence for 18 years serving the Tri-Valley. It began with a group of dedicated parent volunteers who created hands-on learning activities and brought them into Tri-Valley classrooms. In 2007, VCM received the donation of a 53’ mobile classroom trailer which can accommodate up to 20 students plus teachers and facilitators. The trailer was originally created as a mobile classroom about the California Missions. Recently, through a donation from Sandia Labs, the trailer has now been converted into a Makerspace with the goal of offering creative STEAM play (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math). Walls have been outfitted with magnetic and LEGO panels and chalkboards, and new supplies have been installed for building, experimenting and creating. Let the “challenges” begin! Read more…

DUBLIN, CA–While many families are making plans on what to do this summer, Dublin Troop 905 is gearing up to execute the second half of their Scout developed annual plan. Most long time Dublin residents are well aware of Troop 905’s 37 years in the community with their annual Christmas Tree Pick-up Fundraiser. Residents also see them at Dublin’s St. Patrick’s Day Celebration and Splatter events partnering with the city to keep the events clean by emptying the green waste, recyclables, and trash receptacles.

Whether they are camping in the snow or hiking up to the top of Mount St. Helena there is something every month throughout the year. Scouts plan each event using a Scout Planning Worksheet that answers the who, what, when and where. They then put this theory to practice by executing their plan. Read more…

DUBLIN, CA–The Dublin Unified School District, having lost two Board Trustees to mid-term resignations and just last week its Superintendent, announced today that the entire Board will be replaced by a machine learning-powered “AI Trustee Engine” provided by Silicon Valley startup HalBoard.net.

In a statement released by the Board explaining the radical move, “Due to a significant decline in civility during Board meetings, the negative feedback from the community, and the toxic nature of social media we have decided that HalBoard.net is the perfect technology to replace the traditional human-based model of education governance.” Read more…

DUBLIN, CA–The Dublin Unified School District sent the following email to the community, and OneDublin.org, with details of the latest offer in the ongoing negotiation between DUSD and the Dublin Teachers Association (DTA).

On the DTA Facebook page the following statement was posted yesterday: “We will always deliver on our commitments #ForDublinStudents and as we stated yesterday, at the close of business we can officially announce: WE ARE CERTIFIED FOR FACT FINDING. DUSD has given an “On the Record” proposal that does not put the needs of Dublin students, educators and community first. In fact it puts the needs of DUSD Management above all. We will be moving forward with our March on Tuesday, the process of fact finding and hopefully DUSD Management will realize that Dublin deserves the BEST for our students: Best class sizes, Best supports for our Students and the Best Educators! We do not want to STRIKE, but we will #ForDublinStudents”

Today’s offer seeks to meet DTA as closely as possible to their proposed contract terms, while ensuring the long-term fiscal health of our schools. We feel that today’s offer provides equitable pay for our dedicated teachers and allows us to have the ongoing resources to invest in critical needs like new text books, professional development, educational programs and services and counselors. DUBLIN, CA–On Monday, March 11, 2019, the Tri-Valley SELPA and the Dublin Unified School District will host a special screening of “Angst” at the Dublin High School Center for Performing Arts & Education.

The goal of the documentary is to raise awareness about anxiety by starting a dialogue between local families, community leaders and experts. Through candid interviews, the producers utilize the power of film to tell the stories of many kids and teens who discuss their anxiety and its impacts on their lives and relationships, as well as how they’ve found solutions and hope. The film also includes a special interview with Michael Phelps, a renowned Olympic athlete and mental health advocate. Free tickets are now available and space is limited! The evening will begin with light refreshments at 6:00 p.m., followed by the special screening at 6:30 p.m.
