“I am Dublin High” Senior Awards Night Class of 2010
OneDublin.org attended the Dublin High School Class of 2010 Senior Awards Night earlier this week and witnessed senior after senior rewarded for their academic and extracurricular efforts. Over $450,000 in scholarships have been awarded to the Class of 2010, and a subset of those awards were presented in person. Students choosing to serve their country with military service were also recognized.
Among the awards and scholarships presented: National Merit Scholarship, Rotary Student of the Year, Lions Club Scholarship, 20 Bank of America Achievement Awards, 20 California Scholarship Federation Life Members, Scholarships from colleges across the US (here are just a few: Columbia University, Chapman University, Biola University, UC – Davis, UC – Irvine, Oregon Institute of Technology and Westmont College), Dublin High Alumni Scholarships, Dublin Athletic Boosters awards, Dublin High Irish Guard Band Boosters awards and the Dublin / San Ramon Women’s Club Scholarship. In all, over 100 students were recognized in over 70 award and scholarship categories. OneDublin.org published a primer on college scholarships (more information available here) to help parents and students navigate the many options for making college more affordable.
For the most inspiring 3 minutes available on OneDublin.org enjoy Dublin High students celebrating their collegiate success in “I am Dublin High – Class of 2010”:
Dublin community members united today in opposition to the Tri-Valley Learning Corp.’s Tassajara Prep charter petition. Tri-Valley Learning Corp. was recently denied a charter petition by the Dublin Unified School District to open Tassajara Prep. Tri-Valley Learning Corp. appealed the local school board decision to the Alameda County Board of Education. Today’s public hearing was part of the appeal process. A vote on the charter petition denial will take place on the morning of June 22 by the Alameda County Board of Education.
As was the case at the Dublin Unified School District public hearing, not a single Dublin parent spoke in support of the Tassajara Prep charter petition. Over 50 opponents of the charter petition took time off work to attend the public hearing. Only 3 representatives of Tri-Valley Learning Corp. attended the public hearing: Bill Batchelor, Dr. Jeff Watkins and Tim Hall (none of whom have children in Dublin public schools or have any direct experience with Dublin public education).
[UPDATE] On Tuesday June 22 the Alameda County Board of Education denied the appeal of the Tassajara Prep charter petition. Details available here. Tri-Valley Learning Corp. can now appeal to the State Board of Education.
Jazz bands from four Tri-Valley high schools (Dougherty Valley, Monte Vista, Foothill and Dublin) teamed up Friday night to raise money for the American Cancer Society and the ALS Association. The first annual event, hosted by Dublin High School and held in the Dublin Senior Center ballroom, was a toe-tapping hit for all in attendance. Missed the event? You can view highlights from each band’s performance, including a few words from each jazz band music director, below courtesy of the OneDublin.org YouTube channel:
- Dougherty Valley High Jazz Band led by Dougherty Valley High School Music Director Teri Musiel
- Monte Vista High Jazz Band led by Monte Vista High School Music Director Ed Cloyd
- Foothill High Jazz Band led by Foothill High School Music Director Josh Butterfield
- Dublin High Jazz Band led by Dublin High School Music Director Paul D. Everts
Parents, students and members of the community cheered on each jazz band while enjoying desserts served by Dublin High School music program students. All proceeds from the door and tips to student waiters were donated to the American Cancer Society and the ALS Association – over $2,000 was raised at the event.

City of Dublin Mayor Tim Sbranti has a long history with Dublin public schools – from kindergarten right through to Dublin High School where he graduated with the Class of ’93 before heading off to college. Graduating Dublin High School on the Principal’s Honor Roll, Sbranti had the opportunity to enter the University of California (UC) system as well as premier private colleges. He chose Sacramento State for its unique combination of government studies, journalism and education. “Sac State” also offered proximity to the California State Legislature.
Sbranti has come full circle in many ways at Dublin High School. As a journalism teacher, he leads the Dublin High student newspaper (The Dublin Shield) he used to write for and as leadership teacher advises the Dublin High student government where he served as Student Body President in his senior year.
With the Dublin High School $120M renewal project as a backdrop, Sbranti took a few minutes to share his Dublin public education story with OneDublin.org:
What do Harvard, Princeton, Yale, MIT, Stanford and Columbia have in common? All are in the top 10 according to US News & World Report Best Colleges 2010 and all mailed offers of admission to Dublin High School Class of 2010 seniors.
You can add to that list every University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) campus along with colleges across North America (the full list is summarized below). To help parents and students achieve their college dreams, OneDublin.org has prepared a College Primer for Parents covering college admissions, scholarships and more (available here).
Dublin High School Class of 2010 students are also taking advantage of cost-effective Community College Transfer Programs into 4-year colleges. According to Dublin High School Counseling, 95% of Dublin High School students destined for a local community college are intending to transfer into a 4-year college for their junior year. More information on Community College Transfer Programs is available here.
It is also no surprise that ten of Dublin High School’s Class of 2010 students are intending to serve their country in the US military, given the Camp Parks military facility unique to our Dublin home.
All told 96% of the Dublin High School Class of 2010 reported plans to attend college this Fall having received one or more acceptance letters (in annual graduating class surveys administered by Dublin High School Counseling). Dublin High School is included in Newsweek’s 2010 list of America’s Top Public High Schools and received a statewide rank of 9 (out of 10) and a similar schools rank of 9 (out of 10) from the California Department of Education for its 2009 API of 842 (full results available here). Dublin High School’s UC admission rate for 2008-9 was 84% (read more…). Congratulations Dublin High School Class of 2010 and good luck on your finals!
OneDublin.org recently spoke with John Green Elementary School teacher Carley Kennedy and Dublin parent John Rodriguez on the successful Positive Action program launched earlier this year at John Green Elementary School. Positive Action is a nationally recognized program targeting academics, behavior and character. At John Green Elementary, Ms. Kennedy and Mr. Rodridguez have applied the program by having students prepare for and lead three themed assemblies for all elementary grade levels:
- Positive Self Concept
- The Golden Rule
- Do Your Best
The most recent Positive Action assembly, “Do Your Best”, portrayed a student taking a test and responding to “positive” and “negative” thoughts role played by other students. Students in attendance learned through an entertaining role play the power of positive thinking. Over twenty John Green Elementary students spent several weeks preparing for the assemblies which included the “Do Your Best” role play plus a question and answer session led by the students.

“Arts education not only enhances students’ understanding of the world around them, but it also broadens their perspective on traditional academics. The arts give us the creativity to express ourselves, while challenging our intellect. The arts integrate life and learning for all students and are integral in the development of the whole person.” -Dr. Terry Bergeson, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Washington State
Dublin High School has a thriving performing arts community on its campus – dedicated and award-winning musicians and a growing drama department full of students with passion and talent.
Paul Everts, Dublin High School’s Music Director, said his students (approximately 125 in the various music programs and classes) are pursuing excellence through music education that is invaluable to their future college dreams.
“And that benefits the community and the campus,” Everts said. “Music education at Dublin High School supports the ‘Integrity in Action’ program. The goal is to prepare students to become respectful, responsible and disciplined citizens.”
Not to mention collaborative and passionate individuals.
The Mengell family recently invited OneDublin.org into their home to interview Dublin High School Junior (and Wells Middle School graduate) Kirsten Mengell. Ms. Mengell recently won first place in her division at the Tri-Valley Science and Engineering Fair sponsored by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (along with seven other Dublin High School student scientists, more information available here). Her science fair project, “An Epidemiology Study to Find a Correlation between Sleep and Depression”, also won her a $1,000 college scholarship in the Young Epidemiology Scholars Competition sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the College Board. Ms. Mengell’s success has already had an impact on her peers – 50 Dublin High School students have expressed an interest in competing next year at the Tri-Valley Science and Engineering Fair, and Ms. Mengell is planning to share her experiences with Dublin middle school students in the weeks ahead.
Dublin Student Artists On Display at Stoneridge Mall
Dublin Partners in Education and Dublin Unified School District students – from pre-kindergarten right through high school – treated the tri-valley to an artistic treat at Stoneridge Mall this afternoon. The winning entries of the annual Dublin Partners in Education Student Art Contest graced the sunlit concourse in the center of Stoneridge Mall Sunday afternoon for Dublin parents, students and passersby from the tri-valley community at large. Mall visitors were allowed to vote on their favorite artwork and frames throughout the day.
The Dublin Partners in Education Student Art Contest for 2010 concludes at the Dublin Partners in Education Art Reception & Auction. This event is held from 4PM – 7:30PM on Saturday May 22 at The Holiday Inn on Regional Street in Dublin. The annual celebration of student art not only raises funds for our local schools but also provides for a relaxing night of socializing and art appreciation. Local celebrities Juliette Goodrich and Jim Hampton will auction off all 1st place pieces of original student artwork (each professionally framed). Tickets for the event are $40 – more information is available here.
OneDublin.org took a few moments to interview Dublin Partners in Education Executive Director Janet Lockhart during the Stoneridge Mall event:
For those who couldn’t attend, here is a small sample of the talented art created by Dublin students:
John Green Elementary School, in partnership with the Lawrence Hall of Science, held a fun and educational Art of Math Festival Thursday night.
