Meet Dublin High School Student Scientist and Varsity Athlete Kirsten Mengell
The Mengell family recently invited OneDublin.org into their home to interview Dublin High School Junior (and Wells Middle School graduate) Kirsten Mengell. Ms. Mengell recently won first place in her division at the Tri-Valley Science and Engineering Fair sponsored by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (along with seven other Dublin High School student scientists, more information available here). Her science fair project, “An Epidemiology Study to Find a Correlation between Sleep and Depression”, also won her a $1,000 college scholarship in the Young Epidemiology Scholars Competition sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the College Board. Ms. Mengell’s success has already had an impact on her peers – 50 Dublin High School students have expressed an interest in competing next year at the Tri-Valley Science and Engineering Fair, and Ms. Mengell is planning to share her experiences with Dublin middle school students in the weeks ahead.
Ms. Mengell has enjoyed science since she was a child and has taken advantage of Dublin High School’s diverse science program during her first three years of high school. Ms. Mengell participates in the GetSET (Get Science, Engineering and Technology) program offered by the Society of Women Engineers. In her senior year, Ms. Mengell is looking forward to continuing her exploration of science and research by taking courses in biotechnology and anatomy. In the interview, Ms. Mengell spotlights her science teachers for inspiring and encouraging her love of science. She also has a positive message for middle schoolers that yes – science is cool.
When Ms. Mengell isn’t exploring the world of science she is a member of the Dublin High School Varsity Track team (which she joined as a freshman), competing in the shot put and discus events. Ms. Mengell also enjoys the creative process of visual arts (an example of her work is shown to the right). In other words, a student taking full advantage of everything Dublin High has to offer.
Ms. Mengell intends to continue her pursuit of science in college, and looks forward to earning a degree in medicine. OneDublin.org congratulates Kirsten Mengell on her accomplishments. Good luck for your SATs and college admission!
