OneDublin.org recently spoke with John Green Elementary School teacher Carley Kennedy and Dublin parent John Rodriguez on the successful Positive Action program launched earlier this year at John Green Elementary School.  Positive Action is a nationally recognized program targeting academics, behavior and character.  At John Green Elementary, Ms. Kennedy and Mr. Rodridguez have applied the program by having students prepare for and lead three themed assemblies for all elementary grade levels:

  • Positive Self Concept
  • The Golden Rule
  • Do Your Best

The most recent Positive Action assembly, “Do Your Best”, portrayed a student taking a test and responding to “positive” and “negative” thoughts role played by other students.  Students in attendance learned through an entertaining role play the power of positive thinking.  Over twenty John Green Elementary students spent several weeks preparing for the assemblies which included the “Do Your Best” role play plus a question and answer session led by the students.

The implementation of Positive Action at John Green Elementary School extends beyond the assemblies into the classroom where teachers reinforce the concepts with classroom discussions.  Positive Action is the top rated character education program for overall effectiveness according to the U.S. Dept. of Education.  The mission of Positive Action is: “To improve society by teaching and promoting the positive actions that lead individuals, families, schools/sites, and communities to success and happiness, which is feeling good about who you are, what you are doing, and how you treat others (being the best you can be).”  Ms. Kennedy and Mr. Rodriguez look forward to continuing the program at John Green Elementary School next year.
