St. Mary’s College of California Hosting College Fair – Sat. May 8, 1:00 – 4:30PM

April 6, 2010

Mark the date – on Saturday May 8 from 1:00 – 4:30pm St. Mary’s College of California is hosting the 2010 East Bay College Connection College Fair (directions available here).

This is a free event open to the public. In addition to hosting over 130 different colleges and universities from across the country, there will also be a variety of workshops, in both English and Spanish, on everything from Admissions and Financial Aid to the Scholar Athlete and services for students with learning disabilities.  Parents, students, educators and counselors can meet with college representatives from across the country – all in one afternoon.

Due to limited parking, a shuttle from the Orinda BART Station has been arranged (conveniently running every 20 minutes during the event).

OneDublin.org recently interviewed Gina Meneni, Senior Associate Director – Admissions, on the college admissions process and the St. Mary’s College of California experience.

For those that couldn’t make it to this year’s College Fair I can report back that it was a terrific event. We went as a family and were able to talk to colleges from across the U.S. and even a few from Canada and Europe. The college representatives were very knowledgeable and enthusiastic – we came in with a lot of questions and left with answers for every one of them. Of note was a conversation with a UC Berkeley Admissions Officer regarding UC system cutbacks resulting in a higher percentage of out-of-state and out-of-country applicants being accepted (because the tuitions are higher for those students). The Admissions Officer assured me that while acceptance of students in those categories has increased somewhat, the UC system is required by their constitution to have a majority of students be residents of California.

Another very useful data point – this is only relevant for those with children holding Canadian (or Dual US – Canadian) citizenship – Canadian citizens can attend any Canadian university at the citizen tuition rate (approx. CDN$5000 in 2010) – there is no residency requirement or equivalent of an “out of state” tuition charge. Additionally, three months after arriving in Canada, citizens are covered by Canada’s health care system. That opens up a whole new range of affordable college opportunities.
