Tutoring University Needs More Tutors!

The Tutoring University is becoming so popular that they are desperately in need of more tutors! They are searching for adults willing to tutor with whatever commitment they can offer. Tutors in Math and Science are especially needed.

Tutoring University is available to any DHS student at no charge on Monday and Thursday evenings from 6:00– 7:30 p.m. downstairs in the Math collaborative space.

Our school will administer the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) to all 10thgraders on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 8 and 9, 2011, at the school site during regular school hours in a large group setting.

It is essential that your student is here both days. Please speak to your student about the importance of passing this exam. Remind him/her to take all the time necessary to complete the exam. Encourage your student to get a good night’s sleep before and to eat a nutritious breakfast. The goal is to have all students pass on the first attempt. All students must pass both California High School Exit exam tests in order to receive a diploma.

If students do not pass the ELA portion, they will automatically be enrolled next year in the CAHSEE prep class. This will be one of their electives.

If students do not pass the Math portion, they will start after-school tutorial in the fall.

For students who do not pass a section of the test, they must continue to take it until they pass. Juniors have two opportunities to take the test while seniors have five opportunities. If students do not pass by the senior year, they will not walk in graduation.

Attention Juniors

Prep for College Night is for our juniors and their parents. Counselors will present information and updates on the college admission process, college choices and how to narrow your search, testing, scholarships, financial aid and how to use this summer wisely to prepare for the senior year. We also have numerous handouts on how to start your college essay, letters of recommendation, and more. March 16th at 6:30 pm in the Little Theater. See you there!

Pertussis Immunization Reminder

Pertussis is widespread. If your child 7 years and older has not yet received the “Tdap” pertussis booster shot, please contact your doctor or health department. Getting a booster shot now will protect your child against the ongoing threat of pertussis and meet a new school requirement that begins in the 2011-12 school year (California law – Assembly Bill 354).

Adults are also advised to get a pertussis booster shot, if they haven’t already, to protect themselves, their families, and their students. For questions please contact Christi Slofkosky, Health Clerk at DHS at 833-3300 ext. 7015 or email is your one-stop site for information on California school immunization laws, with special attention to the 2011 implementation of AB 354.
