Wells Middle School Crab Feed Fundraiser Returns for 24th Year

January 5, 2012

by Jean Josey (Wells Middle School PFC Co-President)

Looking for a fun way to support Dublin public education? Tickets are on sale now for the 24th annual Wells Middle School Crab Feed, which will be held on February 25th at St. Raymond’s Moran Hall in Dublin. Tickets are $50 per person and are available through the Wells Middle School office during normal business hours; get your tickets early because this event regularly sells out. If you are interested in purchasing tickets, but are unable to make it over to Wells during the day, email the Wells Middle School PFC at, and they’ll make arrangements to get the tickets to you.

Wells Middle School’s Crab Feed in Depth

If you are new to Dublin, or have been here for a while but never made it to the Wells Crab Feed, you may not be sure what to expect. We’d like to shed a little light on what the Crab Feed is all about. You can also learn more about last year’s successful event on Dublin Patch (read more…).

The Crab Feed has been a Wells Middle School tradition for 24 years.  It’s Wells Middle School’s biggest fundraiser of the year and is first and foremost a big party. Tables are for 10 people: you can purchase a table and select your “crab-mates” or you can be assigned to a table and meet new people.  If you are with a group but have less than 10 people, you’ll be paired up with other guests. If you have more than 10 people, your tables will be grouped together. Either way, you’ll sit with your pals and maybe make some new ones.  Dinner is a lot more than just crab, with all-you-can eat pasta, salad and bread as well.  So even if you don’t like crab, you won’t go home hungry.

The evening starts with a cocktail hour, and our bar sells beer, wine, and a surprise specialty drink. Greeters at the door will show you to your table and collect a $10 corkage fee for any bottles of wine you choose to bring in. (Please remember that bringing in outside alcohol other than wine is against our alcohol policy.) After about an hour of socializing, our 8th-grade student volunteers will serve you dinner.

After dinner there is a live auction with a few really special items, followed by a dessert auction. No dessert is served with dinner – if you want dessert, you need to bid on it by table. There will be about 17 desserts in the auction, and there will be approximately 30 tables of guests – as a result the dessert auction gets very competitive!

From the beginning of the night, a silent auction is set-up in the side room. Be sure to check often on the items you want – you don’t want to get out-bid at the last-minute!

At approximately 8:30, when dinner is over, our 8th-grader volunteers are sent home and the DJ kicks in with dance music. That’s about the time we will draw the raffle ticket for the iPad – so don’t leave early. Dancing continues right up until the evening closes at 11pm.

New This Year at the Crab Feed

We have a couple of exciting new things going on at the Crab Feed this year. The first is our Champagne and Diamonds Raffle. We will be raffling off jewelry from Barons Jewelers in Stoneridge Mall. Not just any jewelry – we will be raffling off a diamond necklace valued at between $2,000 and $3,000 (yes, you read that right). You buy a glass of champagne and it comes with a raffle ticket. Cross your fingers!

Also new this year is the Wine Wheel. We have some really nice wines that were donated to us by various wineries around California. Each $10 spin wins one of these nice bottles of wine to go with your dinner or to take home. Of course, there will be no corkage fee for these bottles!

Crab Feed Donations and Sponsorships

In difficult economic times, gathering donations for our silent, live and dessert auctions is challenging.  This is where the community can really make a difference. We are reaching out to you, seeking ideas and opportunities:

  • If you own a business and are able to donate products or services…
  • If you own a vacation home or a timeshare….
  • If you have season tickets for a local sports team or access to a luxury box…
  • If you have an exciting and interesting job and would like to offer a tour or demonstration…
  • If you work for a business that might be willing to serve as a Crab Feed sponsor to offset our expenses…

Finally, if you own or manage a business, you can advertise in our evening’s program.  Ads range from business card sized to full-page and can be purchased by contacting us through our email address at
