Dublin Area 4 Voters Elect Gabrielle Blackman as New School Board Member

June 5, 2019

dsc_1850Dublin, CA – Dublin Area 4 residents voted in the June 4 Special Election and selected Ms. Gabrielle Blackman as their representative to the Dublin Unified School District Board of Trustees. Ms. Blackman will serve the remainder of former Trustee, Joe Giannini’s, four-year term which ends in December 2020. Trustee Giannini resigned his position on October 22, 2018.

While results are currently unofficial, available information shows 69.4 percent (488 votes) of Area 4 voters selecting Ms. Blackman. A specific date for Ms. Blackman to join the Board has not been confirmed, but will likely be in July or later after the Alameda County Registrar of Voters has certified the election results.

Ms. Blackman is a mother of three school-aged children, a 13-year Dublin resident, a leader in educational planning and design, and plans to bring solutions-driven leadership and extensive academic experience to the Board of Trustees. She is deeply vested in Dublin’s success and is a long-time school and community volunteer with an understanding of the challenges faced by Dublin schools and students.

“The selection of Gabi lends another unique perspective to the makeup of the Board,” says Amy Miller, president of the Dublin Unified School District Board of Trustees. “We are one step closer to a fully seated board, which will help the district navigate the many major projects and decisions in front of us. We look forward to working with Gabi as we move towards the 2019-20 school year.”

Following Mr. Giannini’s resignation, during the regularly scheduled Board meeting on December 11, 2018, the Dublin Unified School District Board of Trustees selected Niranjana Natarajan as its provisional appointee. After the appointment, community members had a thirty-day window to challenge the Board’s selection by filing a petition with the County Superintendent of Schools. A petition to nullify the appointment was submitted on January 2, 2019. On February 1, 2019, the Alameda County Registrar of Voters completed the examination of the petition and concluded the petition had 126 valid signatures, which exceeded the requisite number needed. As a result of this action, the appointment of Natarajan had been terminated and a special election was scheduled for June 4, 2019, with Blackman and Natarajan filing as the two candidates.

The election of Ms. Blackman leaves one open Board seat. During the regularly scheduled Board meeting on February 26, 2019, Trustee Dan Cunningham announced his resignation after over a decade on the board. Cunningham’s vacant seat will be filled in the November 5, 2019, election.
