Jazzin’ for a Cure Unites Local Schools to Raise Money for Cancer Research

May 21, 2011

The second annual Jazzin’ for a Cure event, organized by Dublin High School Music Director Paul Everts, raised over $2,000 for cancer research. Jazz bands from Dublin High School, Dougherty Valley High School, Foothill High School and Wells Middle School set aside rivalries to entertain a full house at the Shannon Center Friday night. The evening was dedicated to the lives of those impacted by cancer including Dianna Moran, a ten-year veteran of Wells Middle School who recently succumbed to a long battle with cancer (read more…).

Below are video highlights for each jazz band’s performances (Dublin High, Dougherty Valley High, Foothill High and Wells Middle School). Video from last year’s event is available here.

Thank you for this nice article and your continuing support of Dublin High School and DUSD. Also, special thanks to Foothill High School, Dougherty Valley High School and Wells Middle School jazz bands – WHOSE PERFORMANCES WERE OVER THE TOP STRONG. In this time when music education and other co- and extra-curricular programs are in jeopardy of being eliminated, events like his one shows how important, special and unique our courses are. Our students, families, friends came together to fundraise for two worthy organizations: AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY & A.L.S. Association. We used our gift of music to provide gifts for those who live with undeserved challenges; people who truly teach us that life is special.

I am very blessed to have colleagues like Mr. Bertelson (WMS), Ms. Musiel (DVHS), & Mr. Butterfield (FHS) who were willing to prepare their students for this event and support this event. I am also very blessed with parents/students who helped with this event. We have the Third Annual JAZZIN’ FOR A CURE OPUS NO. 3 scheduled for Friday night 7pm May 18, 2012. Hope to see you there.

This is just one great example that proves that music is indeed a unique gift and we need to do whatever we can to preserve it in the schools. Great job!
